Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom is a semi-annual music festival in Woodland, CA, produced by the staff of KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis. I helped found the festival in 2005, and I’m proud to see that it’s still going on. They contacted me about designing a t-shirt to be sold at the show. The name of the festival references freedom and re-appropriation of jingoist language, which is what led me to use an eagle in the design. The two-headed eagle, to me, symbolizes freedom and weirdness.

Big Nate’s BBQ

Big Nate’s BBQ is a restaurant founded by NBA Hall of Famer Nate Thurmond. They are in the midst of a rebranding, and I was able to help them with a new logo meant to hearken back to vintage basketball imagery. The type treatment here is based on the 1972 Topps basketball trading card design.

Marine Layer Store Sign

Marine Layer opened a pop-up shop in the Marina district of San Francisco, and they’d found a piece of unfinished wood to use for the sign. I spent an afternoon down at the shop hand-painting the logo and text onto the sign. One interesting thing I learned about painting on natural wood: sandpaper on wood works like a rubber eraser on paper. Go figure.

RC Cola

Another Marine Layer design, this one is based on an RC Cola graphic. Printed on silver t-shirts with red contrast stitching in the yoke.

Tennis Polo

This design was based on a classic 1980′s OP polo. I took the basic color scheme and style of stripes, and created a graphic based on a photograph of tennis legend Bjorn Borg. The design was printed onto fabric before the shirt was assembled, so the stripe is continuous across the chest.

Liftopia

Liftopia is an online lift ticket seller. They contacted Marine Layer about creating a limited-edition t-shirt, and we collaborated on this design. I drew inspiration from a Burton snowboards shirt from the ’90s that used subtle gradients with silhouettes to evoke snowy nighttime scenery. The client was very happy with the final product, and the limited run sold out quickly.

Torah From Tzion

Rabbi Shimshon Nadel is an old friend from New Jersey who has recently moved to Israel. Torah From Tzion is his blog for Torah thought and lectures. For this project, I started with a WordPress theme, tweaked the CSS and created imagery to give a Jerusalem kind of feel. We created a podcast and populated the iTunes page with graphics and information. I had done podcasting previously for Public Radio International, but only using their proprietary back-end software. Turns out, it’s pretty darn easy to write your own RSS code.
