Weezer - The Angel and The One

The Onion A.V. Club included in their review of 2008’s “red album” the memorable line, “On Weezer’s latest worst record…” Based on reviews like that, and all past experience, no one should have bothered to pick it up. Well, for some reason, in the spring of 2009 I did pick it up, and found a couple of things to like on it, one of them being this song. Over-the-top emo, to be sure, but it has redeeming qualities. The oddball sincerity of the lyrics feels like a throwback to their earliest days, and not like the calculated radio fodder they’ve become known for. As the last track on the album (you can tell by the extended double-outro), it seems to be aiming for the mark set on their first album with the 7-minute-plus “Only in Dreams”. This song doesn’t really take you all the way there, but it’s as close as Weezer has gotten in years.
