The Hollies - Write On

This 1976 song by The Hollies shows the band on the downside of their third or fourth comeback. In 1970, after losing Graham Nash to CSNY, they had a major hit with the soft rock staple “Hey Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.” In 1972, they hit their highest US chart position with the CCR-inspired “Long Cool Woman In a Black Dress”, but further songs in the swamp-rock vein were not in the offing. In 1974, they made it to the US charts again with “The Air That I Breathe” (notable for having a very similar chord progression to the Radiohead hit “Creep”), but that was their last real hit. The 1976 album Write On also featured their cover of the Bruce Springsteen song “Sandy”, but the title track is the standout to me. The band-on-the-run lyrics, the way the music alternates between AM radio cheese and FM radio rock, I think it’s pretty classic.
